Summer: the time of rest and relaxation for most, but for some, summer means something totally different. Summer can be a time of preparation, and for many athletes at LHS that’s exactly what they’ll do.
Whether it is workouts, weights, conditioning or just playing in a summer league many of your fellow classmates will be active in preparing for school sports.
“Our main focus would be to get the fundamentals covered, and get the younger girls comfortable with playing with the more experienced girls,” Jarrod Worthington, head coach of the LHS Ladycats, said.
Camps will be offered for several sports through the USD 416 district and their coaching staffs. The volleyball team camp will be July 9-11, football camp will be July 9-13, boys basketball will be June 18-22, girls basketball June 4-7 and wrestling camp June 18-22.
“I feel like volleyball camp is a great way for team bonding, despite its purpose of destroying us physically,” Katie Dixon, junior, said. “We have a lot of fun together and burn a lot of calories.”
These camps will not be all fun and games though. Summer weights will be an intense amount of work to get the athletes prepared, happening all summer Monday through Friday, students will be lifting weights and conditioning to get in shape for the season.
“We try to focus on skills and break some stuff down,” Jessica Smith, LHS head volleyball coach, said. “We test players on individual skils and knowledge.”
No matter what sport, LHS athletes will be busy this summer.
