Kieran Bradley reflects on 2012

Being a part of the newspaper staff for the last two years has helped me grow, not only as a writer but in many other aspects as well. The past year has been a real learning experience for all of us, showing us what works and what doesn’t,  how to manage our time and most of all how to be flexible.

At the beginning of the year I honestly did not know what to expect; I knew that Mrs. Mott was leaving and we would have a brand new adviser with a whole new paper.  Not only was the newspaper going to be different with a new lead member joining with new perspectives and opinions, but the paper was going to be online.

The first few months of attempting to figure out the flow of the new online paper was rough; there was no status quo, no guidelines, and we were to be the front runners of a whole new race. Gradually, as the year progressed, things got better and we began to get into a groove. The paper became a weekly issue and for the most part things had smoothed themselves out from the beginning of the year. Also at semester we gained four new members, which added a whole new flavor to our newspaper.

Our experimental year has been one to learn from, one to grow from our mistakes and make changes. Through the ups and the downs I think that we have all made mistakes, but our biggest achievement of the year was being able to work through them, collaborate, and figure out a better solution.

For me personally being on the newspaper staff, this year especially, has taught me how to be on time. Seriously, just by having to have in a weekly story or photo shoot has improved my chronic problem of consistently being late. I look forward to next year and the challenges that we will face, but also to the solutions that we find.
